Recruitment for students for the 2014 Whale Camps was announced on BMMRO’s Facebook page, by poster advertisements in Abaco communities and through co-ordination with Nikita Shiel-Rolle of the Young Marine Explorers. The Camps filled quickly, including interest from Sandy Point students, so it was decided to add a third Camp for those living in Sandy Point. In all, fourteen students participated in the 2014 Whale Camps including students from Nassau, Long Island and Abaco.
The Camps were successful in accomplishing their primary goal of inspiring young Bahamians to pursue a career in science as summarized in a thank you letter from Renee Farquharson (Camp I): “As a young aspiring marine biologist, by attending this Whale Camp, and observing your day to day activities, I have gained a wealth of knowledge and skills that has set a foundation that I can build upon.”
