Task: Stranding Response Readiness
There were no known strandings in the Bahamas during this quarter.
Task: Manatee Monitoring
BMMRO continued monitoring the status of manatees throughout the Bahamas via social media
and opportunistic field work. During the period, nine different animals were documented.
Unfortunately, one of these animals was reported to be in very poor condition and was therefore
rescued and transported from Eleuthera to Atlantis’ Dolphin Cay facility in Nassau for
rehabilitation. The manatee is a known young male from Florida that seems to have made its way
to the Bahamas following hurricane Irma. He has put on a substantial amount of weight and is
due to be released back to Eleuthera in early January. His rescue, rehabilitation and release have
been a collaborative effort between BMMRO, Atlantis’ Dolphin Cay, the Department of
Fisheries and the US Geological Survey in Florida.
